Mobile Computing Project (1995-1998)

Overview

We are currently investigating several areas in wireless computing. Of particular interest are issues of quality of service and mobility management, including traffic shaping, traffic modelling, and security in a wireless environment.

A plan for our examination of wireless application and API design was presented at IWQoS'96, and led to the design of an API now called "CoMMA". A more current overview of current directions in the Shoshin's mobile project, including hardware details, is also availble.

A hot area of activity, right now, is in modifying our earlier work with a proxy service-provider to provide more general traffic manipulation options to mobile applications. A recent report provides details about our plans in this area.

Plans are also under way with Bell Mobility to examine client-server applications for portable devices operating in wireless environments ( details).
